| WHITE DESERTS AND COLOURED LAKES |
|
The southern Altiplano in Bolivia is famed for its extraordinary scenery – sand deserts and salt flats, numerous different-coloured lakes and formerly volcanic snow-capped mountains. The visitor will discover indigenous communities whose occupations include shepherding llamas, working in tourism and growing quinua, a highly nutritious cereal that has been cultivated in the high Andes since pre-Inca times. Herds of vicuña and rhea can be seen a short distance away from the road, as well as pink flamingos on the lakes and several types of wild duck.

The southern part of the region around the Laguna Colorada is a protected area called the Eduardo Abaroa Nature Reserve (REA).
Adventure tourism is booming and has become one of the main sources of income in the region, together with mining. The region’s main towns are Uyuni and Tupiza.
