THE BOLIVIAN INITIATIVE
40 years after the Salar de Uyuni was declared a state reserve, the government of Evo Morales decided to awaken the sleeping giant. It has launched an initiative to industrialize the minerals in Bolivia’s salt flats, with the aim of manufacturing lithium, potassium and boron products to be sold to final consumers, abiding by Bolivia’s global responsibility to combat monopolies and speculation.

The first step in setting up this new industry is to build a pilot plant, whose main task is to carry out a feasibility study on the large industrial plant planned for the future, while also starting to produce and sell small quantities of lithium carbonate and other by-products from brine.

The initiative will also work to raise public awareness, both in Bolivia and around the world, about the need to develop a public, social enterprise in Uyuni to supply the world market with various lithium products in a sustainable way.

Responsibility for taking this project forward lies with the Bolivian Evaporite Deposits Division, the operational arm of COMIBOL (Bolivian Mining Corporation) specializing in the field.

The project was launched on May 10th 2008 by President Evo Morales in Llipi Loma, Río Grande canton, Department of Potosí, amid high expectations in the region’s communities.
