| PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT |
The pilot plant will abide by all the environmental legislation currently in force.
Here we summarize the mitigation measures that are envisaged to address the main environmental impact risks:
Brine is pumped from the Salar through pipelines that take it to the edge of the salt flats.
The solar evaporation ponds are lined with plastic membranes to prevent the brine from leaking out.
Chloride salts such as common salt (halite, sodium chloride) and bischofite (magnesium chloride) produced by precipitation in evaporation ponds are returned to the Salar through a brine pipeline.
The quantity of fresh water used in the process is replaced as much as possible by SALINE river water from the Río Grande de Lípez.
One of the aims of the pilot plant is to carry out an on-the-ground assessment of the environmental impact of the larger plant.
Environmental impact will depend primarily on the type of chemical industry process that is selected and by future production capacity.
